- a)Cell (Celda): Geometric configuration given to solid waste and its cover material, duly compacted, as part of the sanitary landfill technique.
- b)Waste (Desechos): Substances or movable objects, without direct use, whose owner needs to dispose of them or is obligated to do so according to national laws.
- c)Special waste (Desechos especiales): are solids, gases, fluid liquids, and pastes contained in receptacles, which due to their chemical reactivity, toxic, damage to health or the environment.
These wastes require special handling and monitoring, from their generation to their final disposal. According to their type and origin, they are grouped as follows:
agro-industrial (agroindustriales): are the remains of pesticides, fertilizers, and packaging materials contaminated by them, as well as waste from the agro-industry.
animal bodies (cuerpos de animales): remains or whole bodies of animals that must receive adequate sanitary disposal.
from health establishments (de establecimientos de salud): are those that require special handling within and outside the health institution where they are generated. These come from isolation areas for infectious patients, microbiological laboratories, surgery, childbirth, hemodialysis services, and others. It also includes human organic remains from surgery, childbirth, morgue, and pathological anatomy areas, as well as remains of test animals for diagnosis or experimentation.
hazardous household (domésticos peligrosos): are household, commercial, and administrative waste of high toxicity, such as batteries with heavy metals, thermometers, cosmetics, medications, containers with remnants of halogenated propellants, pesticides, paint residues, etc.
gaseous emanations (emanaciones gaseosas): are gases that contain toxic substances or that, upon reacting in the atmosphere, form them. Includes fumes, sulfur and nitrogen oxides, halogenated compounds, and heavy metal compounds.
radioactive (radiactivos): are waste from laboratory, radiotherapy, and nuclear medicine sections; they are usually generated in health institutions.
ordinary industrial (industriales ordinarios): are those generated in any industrial activity, which due to their characteristics and quantity, cannot be collected or deposited together with those of domestic origin.
hazardous industrial residues (residuos industriales peligrosos): are waste from industrial activities, basically from the chemical, metallurgical, paper, textile, tannery industry, etc. They also include sludge from the treatment of industrial wastewater, if due to its composition and effects, it is considered hazardous.
- d)ordinary waste (desechos ordinarios): are solids, gases, fluid liquids, and pastes that do not require special treatment before being disposed of. According to their type and origin, they are grouped as follows:
domestic and similar waste (desechos domésticos y similares): household, administrative, commercial, and industrial similar to domestic, street sweeping, garden waste, etc., that by nature, composition, size, and volume, are incorporated in the collection carried out by the urban sanitation entity.
debris (escombros): are waste from the demolition of constructions and earth from excavations.
sludge (lodos) from the treatment of domestic or similar wastewater.
- e)Final disposal (Disposición final): is the controlled and environmentally adequate operation of depositing waste in a sanitary landfill, according to its nature.
- f)Sanitary landfill (Relleno sanitario): is the technique by which solid waste is deposited daily, spread, arranged, compacted, and covered using machinery. Its purpose is to prevent and avoid damage to health and the environment, especially from the contamination of bodies of water, soils, the atmosphere, and the population by preventing the propagation of arthropods and rodents.
- g)Manual sanitary landfill (Relleno sanitario manual): is one in which heavy equipment is only required for the preparation of the site and the construction of internal roads, as well as for the excavation of trenches, the extraction, transport, and distribution of cover material. All other work, such as the construction of drains for leachate and chimneys for gases, as well as the process of arrangement, coverage, compaction, and other related works, are carried out manually.
- h)Mechanized sanitary landfill (Relleno sanitario mecanizado): is one in which heavy equipment is required permanently on site, as well as strict control and monitoring mechanisms for its operation.
- i)Waste dump (Vertedero de desechos): is the site or place, without prior preparation, where waste is deposited, without technique or through very rudimentary techniques, and in which adequate control is not exercised.
- j)Useful life of the sanitary landfill (Vida útil del relleno sanitario): is the period of time between the start of sanitary landfill operations and its closure.
