"Article 21.- Composition of the Áreas de Conservación. SINAC shall be constituted by the following eleven Áreas de Conservación:
I. Área de Conservación Guanacaste
Comprises the cantons of Liberia and La Cruz. In addition to the limits of the protected areas contained in said cantons and including the limits of the Parque Nacionales Rincón de la Vieja and Guanacaste.
II. Área de Conservación Tempisque
Comprises the Cantons of Carrillo, Hojancha, Nandayure, Nicoya, Santa Cruz and the districts of Cóbano, Lepanto and Paqueras (Canton of Puntarenas), the Gulf of Nicoya and its Islands. In addition to the limits of the protected areas contained in said cantons.
III. Área de Conservación Arenal Tempisque
Comprises the Cantons of Abangares, Bagaces, Cañas, Tilarán. In addition to the limits of the protected areas contained in said cantons and including the limits of the Parque Nacional Volcán Tenorio, the Zonas Protectoras Miravalles, Tenorio and Arenal Monteverde.
IV. Área de Conservación Tortuguero
Comprises the Cantons of Guácimo, Pococí. In addition to the limits of the protected areas contained in said cantons and including the Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Barra del Colorado.
V. Área de Conservación La Amistad Caribe
Comprises the Cantons of Limón, Matina, Siquirres and Talamanca. In addition to the limits of the protected areas contained in said cantons and including the Reserva Forestal Río Pacuare and Parque Nacional Barbilla.
VI. Área de Conservación Osa
Comprises the Cantons of Corredores, Golfito and Osa. In addition to the limits of the protected areas contained in said cantons.
VII. Área de Conservación La Amistad Pacífico
Comprises the Cantons of Coto Brus, Pérez Zeledón and Buenos Aires. In addition to the limits of the protected areas contained in said cantons and including the Parque Nacional Chirripó.
VIII. Área de Conservación Central
Comprises the Cantons of Acosta, Aserrí, Dota, León Cortés, Mora, Puriscal, Tarrazú, Turrubares, the Districts of Rosario, San Cristobal and Frailes (Canton Desamparados), the district of Corralillo (Canton Cartago), El Guarco (except Tejar), Alajuela (except the district of Sarapiquí), Alajuelita, Alvarado, Barva, Belén, Cartago (except the district of Corralillo), Curridabat, Desamparados (except the districts of San Cristóbal, Frailes and El Rosario), Escazú, Flores, Goicoechea, Grecia (except the district of Río Cuarto), Heredia, Jiménez, La Unión, Montes de Oca, Moravia, Naranjo, Oreamuno, Palmares, Paraíso, Poás, San Isidro, San José, San Pablo, San Rafael, San Ramón (except the district of Peñas Blancas), Santa Ana, Santa Bárbara, Santo Domingo, Tibás, Turrialba, Valverde Vega (except the district Toro Amarillo), Vásquez de Coronado, Zarcero (except Palmira) and the district of Tejar del Guarco. In addition to the limits of the protected areas contained in said cantons and including the Parque Nacionales Volcán Poás, Braulio Carrillo, Zonas Protectoras Río Toro and Zona la Selva, Reserva Forestal Cordillera Volcánica Central, Reserva Biológica Alberto Manuel Brenes Mora, Parque Nacional Tapantí Macizo Cerro de la Muerte, Reserva Forestal Río Macho, Zonas protectoras cuenca del Río Tuis and Cerros de Escazú. In addition to the limits of the protected areas contained in said cantons and including the Parque Nacional Tapantí Macizo Cerro de la Muerte, Reserva Forestal Río Macho, Zonas protectoras cuenca del Río Tuis and Cerros de Escazú.
IX. Área de Conservación Pacífico Central
Comprises the cantons of Quepos, Esparza, Garabito, Montes de Oro, Orotina, Parrita, San Mateo, Puntarenas (except the districts of Cóbano, Lepanto and Paquera). In addition to the limits of the protected areas contained in said cantons and including Zona Protectora Montes de Oro, Refugio de Vida Silvestre Peñas Blancas and Parque Nacional Carara.
X. Área de Conservación Arenal Huetar Norte
Comprises the Cantons of Guatuso, Los Chiles, San Carlos, Sarapiquí, Upala. In addition to the districts of Sarapiquí (Canton Alajuela), Río Cuarto (Canton Grecia), Peñas Blancas (Canton San Ramón), the District of Palmira (Canton Zarcero) and the District of Toro Amarillo (Canton Valverde Vega). In addition to the limits of the protected areas contained in said cantons and including the Parque Nacionales Volcán Arenal and Juan Castro Blanco.
XI. Área de Conservación Marina Coco
Comprises the exclusive economic zone of the Pacific Ocean of Costa Rica, which includes the ecosystems associated with the Parque Nacional Isla del Coco, the Área Marina de Manejo Montes Submarinos, and any marine areas that the country defines as having ecological or biological significance.
