The Reventazón River basin, from its highest point to the mouth of the main channel in the Caribbean Sea, has an area of 2950 km2; however, according to the vector base of hydrographic basins, prepared by the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), updated to 2006, the area of the basin in question is 2830 km2. Within the province of Cartago, it encompasses the cantons of Cartago, Oreamuno, El Guarco, Alvarado, Jiménez, Turrialba, and Paraíso, while, in the province of Limón, it runs through part of the cantons of Pococí, Guácimo, and Siquirres.
Following the dividing line of the basin, taking as a starting point the coordinate pair latitude 1086371 - longitude 4966731, in a NNE direction at the height of Alto Mata de Caña, on the foothills of la Fila Ventolera towards Alto Quebradillas, subsequently crossing the hills of La Carpintera. In the Poroses sector, west of Tierra Blanca, it follows a north direction, heading towards Llano Grande. Approximately at coordinates latitude 1102275 - longitude 511529, it turns east again; it resumes its orientation towards the north at approximate coordinates latitude 1103583 - longitude 522239, in the direction of the Turrialba volcano crater. Near coordinates latitude 1114306 - longitude 528690, the divide heads in an NNW direction, crosses the town of Emilia, near the center of Guápiles, continues through the town of La Cruz and takes an NEE heading for approximately 21 km . Near Hacienda Los Corrales, at coordinates latitude 1111082 - longitude 541375, it takes an NNE direction towards the town of Zancudo, crosses transversally the Lomas de Sierpe (Azules), heads towards the hills near San Gerardo, crosses la Reserva Forestal of IDA, and finally intersects the Caribbean coastline.
1 Transverse Mercator cartographic projection for Costa Rica (CRTM05).
Returning to the starting point latitude 1086371 - longitude 496673, towards the SSE the divide follows a direction towards Casa Mata. At la Vuelta Ventolera it changes direction to the south and resumes the SSE direction towards El Empalme. At the Artieda boundary marker, 2669 meters above sea level, it heads towards Paso Macho and, on the Inter-American Highway, continues towards towns such as Trinidad and Salsipuedes. Near coordinates latitude 1065351 - longitude 517048 it heads with an SSW heading and, at the height of Alto Indio, a small peak that is part of Cerro Vueltas, resumes the direction to the east to run again along the Inter-American Highway until surpassing peaks such as the Sakira, Sábila, Zacatales, and Asunción hills. Near Buenavista it resumes the E direction, running more or less parallel to the Inter-American Highway until cutting it and taking the watershed that runs over the Talamanca mountain range. It seeks towards the Cuericí hills, where it resumes the north heading again for more than 25 km crossing the Cataratas, Mirador, and Silencio hills. At the point whose approximate coordinates are latitude 1087964 - longitude 548729 it takes an NNW heading and, near the town of Pacayitas, resumes the NNE heading passing through Linda Vista (Alto Cincuenta y Dos).
It crosses the towns of San Alejo, Guayacán, and Moravia following approximately parallel to the highway towards Siquirres, intersecting it approximately at coordinates latitude 1116641 - longitude 551041. At this point, it heads in an NNE direction towards San Alberto Viejo, crosses the Atlantic railway line, near Finca San Francisco, runs through plains and wetlands zones and, finally, culminates at the Caribbean coastline.
