Temporary Storage (Almacenamiento Temporal). It is the place designated for the temporary accumulation of solid waste, in apartment buildings, condominiums, or commercial premises.
Urban Cleanliness (Aseo Urbano). These are the activities of sweeping the curb and gutter, cleaning storm sewers, parks, green areas in public educational centers, rivers and streams, as well as vacant lots due to omission by the owners; moreover, the collection of bulky or non-traditional waste.
Collection Center (Centro de Acopio). It is the place used for the storage, classification, and temporary commercialization of usable or recyclable materials.
Placement (Colocación). It is the disposal of waste in containers or bags at the site of its generation, for subsequent collection according to the collection schedule defined by the Municipality.
Container (Contenedor). It is the device used to place the containers of wet and dry solid waste until their collection; they can be baskets, drums, enclosures, or similar.
Environmental Affairs Commission (Comisión de Asuntos Ambientales). It is the permanent commission of the Municipal Council that must propose and formulate the guidelines for the environmental management of the Municipality, in conjunction with the Mayor's Office and the Operations Directorate (Dirección de Operaciones).
Composting (Compostaje). It is the process of biological degradation under aerobic conditions of the organic matter present in biodegradable solid waste.
Wet Solid Waste (Residuos Sólidos Húmedos). This classification includes all wet solid waste of an organic type and waste that is not recyclable.
Dry or Recyclable Solid Waste (Desechos Sólidos Secos o Reciclables). Solid waste that can be reintegrated into nature or into production processes, without harm to human health or the environment, such as paper, cardboard, glass, aluminum, and plastics.
Garden Waste. These are wastes from the cleaning and clearing of gardens and green areas on private lots, including grass, leaves, stems, and branches from shrubs and trees. They do not include trunks more than 10 centimeters in diameter.
Biohazardous Waste (Desechos Bio Peligrosos). It is that which, due to its characteristics and composition, can be a reservoir or vehicle of infection. Among them, those from medical/dental offices and clinics, veterinary clinics, and clinical and pharmaceutical laboratories.
Bulky or Non-Traditional Waste (Desechos Voluminosos o No Tradicionales). Those objects disposed of by their owners sporadically, having reached the end of their useful life, which due to their size and weight are not suitable for ordinary collection, such as metal scrap.
Special Solid Waste (Desechos Sólidos Especiales). Includes biohazardous, toxic, combustible, flammable, objects or elements that, due to their size, volume, or weight, require special management, like commercial, industrial waste, debris (escombros), and others.
Final Disposal (Disposición Final). It is the controlled and environmentally adequate operation of definitively depositing, treating, and/or confining the waste, according to its nature.
Debris (Escombros). This is waste from demolition and construction activities.
Generators of Solid Waste (Generadores de Desechos Sólidos). Corresponds to the users of the collection, transport, and treatment system for wet and dry solid waste, whether or not they are citizens of the canton.
Discriminated Management (Manejo Discriminado). A set of actions aimed at reducing the amounts of waste to be treated in a sanitary landfill through the organization of separation, collection, and utilization and/or recycling of usable materials for their commercialization.
Municipality. Municipality of Curridabat.
(*) Environmental Services Directorate (Dirección de Servicios Ambientales). Entity attached to the Mayor's office responsible, among other functions, for compliance with the environmental regulations applicable to the local government and for collaborating with the definition of policies in the environmental field.
(*)(Its name was modified through session No. 105 of April 29, 2008) Recipient (Recipiente). It is the receptacle used to store waste until its collection, such as plastic bags, buckets with lids, or similar.
Wet Solid Waste Collection Service (Servicio de Recolección Residuos Sólidos Húmedos). Regular collection service for wet solid waste provided by the Municipality in the canton of Curridabat.
Dry or Recyclable Solid Waste Collection Service (Servicio de Recolección Residuos Sólidos Secos o Reciclables): Regular collection service for dry solid waste provided by the Municipality in the canton.
Special Collection Service (Servicio Especial de Recolección). Discriminated collection service for specific materials such as garden waste, batteries, metals, debris (escombros), etc.
