In those TEDs where the space between the deflector bars and the grid frame is 6 inches, the following procedure must be followed to construct the escape opening:
A. The TED is placed vertically.
B. Measure 2 inches to the left of the base of the first deflector bar on the left and from this point make a vertical cut of 26 inches.
C. Measure 2 inches to the right of the base of the first deflector bar on the right and from this point make a vertical cut of 26 inches.
D. Make a cut joining the upper part of the two vertical cuts, creating the opening that shall have a width of 71 inches, when the meshes are stretched.
If the space between the deflector bars and the grid frame of the TED is 4 inches, the previous procedure is followed except that the cuts begin at the base of the first left-side deflector bar and at the base of the first right-side deflector bar.
The flap for the escape opening, also known as the cover (solapa), is constructed by cutting a piece of mesh with a height of 133 inches and a width of 58 inches. The edge of the 133-inch side is sewn 2 to 1 meshes (nudos) on the upper front part of the opening, on the 71-inch edge, that is, for every mesh of the main net, 2 meshes of the cover material are tied, while the 58-inch edge is sewn 1 to 1 mesh, on the two 26-inch edges of the front part of the opening, starting at the top.
The remainder of the escape opening that is left hanging, may be fixed to the sides up to a maximum of 6 inches, measured from the lower edge of the TED frame downwards.
The length of the cover may extend up to a maximum of 24 inches, measured from the lower edge of the TED frame downwards.
The escape opening, measured at the height of the lower edge of the TED frame, must measure at least 71 inches, stretching the lower part of the cover in a straight line at that height.
The cover must measure 71 inches with the mesh stretched, at the top, in the middle, and also at the bottom, thus ensuring that the escape opening has the appropriate dimensions.
