Criterion:
Establishment of biological corridors. Connection of Fila Costeña to Cerro Paraguas.
b. Sector: Basin of the rivers: Sonador, Volcán, Convento, Cacao, Angel, Cañas, Ceibo, Singri, Sarai, Platanares, Mosca, Cabagra, Piedra, Guineal, Platanillal, Limoncito.
Criterion:
Protection of water resources.
c. Sector: Indigenous Reserves Ujarrás, Salitre, Cabagra, Térraba, Boruca, Rey Curré.

PROTECTION CRITERIA a. SECTOR: Río Sombrero and Navarro Protective Zone (Zona Protectora), and others located in the canton of El Guarco that influence within the basins. OBSERVACIONES: Intake of drinking water and electric power production.
CRITERION:
Forested areas that are protecting water resources for human consumption, irrigation, etc.
b. SECTOR: Río Sombrero and Navarro Protective Zone (Zona Protectora), and farms located within Tapantí-Macizo de la Muerte National Park (Parque Nacional Tapantí-Macizo de la Muerte). OBSERVACIONES: Protection of water resources, biodiversity, and soil (steep slopes).
CRITERION:
Privately owned lands located within protected wilderness areas and adjacent areas.
c. SECTOR: Humo Sector, Río Sombrero and Navarro Protective Zone (Zona Protectora), and Tapanti – Macizo de la Muerte National Park (Parque Nacional Tapanti – Macizo de la Muerte). OBSERVACIONES: They form a biological cordon that connects with Chirripó National Park (Parque Nacional Chirripó).

Farms located in areas within the biological corridors identified by the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor Project (Proyecto Corredor Biológico Mesoamericano) and Grúas.
d. SECTOR: Río Sombrero – Río Navarro Protective Zone (Zona Protectora) and sectors of Orosí. OBSERVACIONES: The greatest limitation is the slope (seeks stability with the soils).
CRITERION:
Land-use capability (capacidad de uso del suelo) VI, VII and VIII.
e. SECTOR: Vara del Roble, La Estrella, Palo Verde. OBSERVACIONES: Many pasture areas are in the succession phase towards the formation of secondary forests.

SECTOR: Tejar, Tobsi, Patio de Agua, Palo Verde, La Estrella, Río Sombrero and Navarro Protective Zone (Zona Protectora) and some sectors located in San Isidro de El Guarco. OBSERVACIONES: All these sectors have an adequate road network; in addition, there is a presence of reforestation projects.

5.2.3.2. REFORESTATION CRITERIA a. SECTOR: Sabalito (Valle Hermoso, Pueblo Nuevo, Miraflores, San Ramón, La Unión, San Bosco, Lourdes). OBSERVACIONES: Shows better performance of species such as laurel, pine, eucalyptus, and amarillón. Greater concentration of blocks and agroforestry systems.

High potential for the concentration of plantation blocks that allow industrial development.
b. SECTOR: Torre Alta Santa Cecilia, Concepción, San Gabriel and Santo Domingo de Agua Buena. OBSERVACIONES: Category VI soils, in infiltration zones, very steep slopes, and quite degraded.

5.2.4. PÉREZ ZELEDÓN SUBREGION 5.2.4.1. PROTECTION CRITERIA a. SECTOR: Upper basins of the main rivers located in the districts of Rivas, General Viejo, Cajón, San Pedro, Pejibaye and Platanares, with special interest in the upper basins of the rivers: General (Chirrió Pacifico), Guabo, Pacuar, San Pedro and San Rafael streams (Quebradas). OBSERVACIONES: The management plan must assess the point regarding population centers served, as well as the density of rural aqueducts in the area where they are located, source basin, future projections.
CRITERION:
Forested areas of water production and aquifer recharge that guarantee permanent supply in flow and water quality for rural aqueducts and agricultural irrigation.
b. SECTOR: Remnant natural forests in the Fila Costeña located in the districts of Pejibaye, Platanares, San Isidro and Barú, with special attention to the Tinamastes, San Antonio, Barranco, Temblor and Cariblanco ranges (Filas).
CRITERION:
Forested areas that guarantee the spatial continuity of protected zones, both private and state, that function as biological corridors and form an effective part of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor.
c. SECTOR:
- A)Buffer area of Chirripó National Park (Parque Nacional Chirripó).
- B)Strip 2 km wide from the southern limit of the San Isidro Subregion (Fila Costeña).

Forested areas with land-use capability (capacidad de uso del suelo) categories higher than class VI d. SECTOR: Strip 6 km wide from the southern limit of Chirripó National Park (Parque Nacional Chirripó).

e. SECTOR: Remnant and isolated forest areas, located on agricultural production lands, near urban centers, and other categories lower than VI, according to land-use capability, not covered in previous categories.

Those forested areas that technically allow for management.
All privately owned forests may be managed. In the case of forests located within Protected Wilderness Areas (Áreas Silvestres Protegidas) decreed by the State, the restrictions established for each management category must be respected.
Forests subject to management must have productive potential measured through the following criteria:
For primary forests (bosques primarios), the total basal area (área basal) per hectare must be equal to or greater than 15 m², measured in trees with a diameter at breast height (DAP) greater than or equal to 30 cm.
For secondary forests (bosques secundarios), the total number of trees per hectare must be greater than or equal to 60, with a diameter at breast height (DAP) greater than or equal to 15 cm.
Application of the principles, criteria, and indicators for the sustainable management of forests, Executive Decree (decreto ejecutivo) No. 27388 - MINAE, published in La Gaceta No. 212 of November 2, 1998, and its amendments. In the case of secondary forest (bosque secundario), what is established in principle 11 shall apply.
5.7.2. TILARÁN SUBREGION (SUBREGIÓN TILARÁN) 5.7.2.1. PROTECTION CRITERIA (CRITERIOS DE PROTECCIÓN) a. SECTORS A) Rincón de la Vieja – Miravalles Biological Corridor (C.B. Rincón de la Vieja – Miravalles), located along the La Montaña hills and crossing the ACA – T through the northwestern sector towards the Miravalles Protective Zone (zona protectora Miravalles).
- B)Miravalles - Tenorio Biological Corridor (C.B. Miravalles - Tenorio), located between the Hormiguero creek (quebrada Hormiguero) and the watershed divide.
- C)Monteverde – Gulf of Nicoya Biological Corridor (C.B. Monteverde – Golfo de Nicoya), moves along the banks of the Lagarto and Guacimal rivers in the ACA – T.
- D)Tenorio Caño Negro – Border Biological Corridor (C.B. Tenorio Caño Negro – Frontera), runs along the Frío River, connecting the high parts of the Tilarán Mountain Range (Cordillera de Tilarán) with the wetland complex of the San Juan River and Lake Nicaragua.
- E)West Sector of Lake Arenal Biological Corridor (C.B. Sector Oeste de la Laguna de Arenal), moves over extensive forest patches of very humid evergreen forest at the headwaters of the Chiquito and Caño Negro rivers.
- F)Biological Corridor (C.B.) for quetzals and other birds, located on the western margin of the Arenal – Monteverde Protective Zone (zona protectora Arenal – Monteverde), between the communities of Las Nubes de Río Chiquito and Cabeceras towards the Santa Elena sector. OBSERVATIONS: This corridor can also connect the Abangares Protective Zone (zona protectora Abangares).

The Biological Corridor that runs from the Nicoya Peninsula Protected Zone (Zona Protectora Península de Nicoya) to the Monte Alto Forest Reserve and continues to the Barra Honda National Park. 5.8.5 SUBREGIÓN NICOYA 5.8.5.1. PROTECTION CRITERIA a. SECTOR: Upper basin of the Quirimán River, Montaña, Potrero, Garza, and Buena Vista. OBSERVACIONES: Protection of wetlands, RAMSAR sites.
CRITERION:
Protection of water sources, Nicoya basins.
b. SECTOR: Area with characteristics of forest remnants (reductos de bosques) with high biodiversity content; these areas are distributed throughout the canton of Nicoya. OBSERVACIONES: Since these are small forest remnants, priority will be given to units larger than 2 ha.

PROTECTION CRITERIA Privately owned areas located within National Parks, proposed corridors and other areas according to the CBM project, aquifer recharge areas according to the FUNDECOR study, 1992, land-use capacity areas (class VIII).
Areas within Protected Zones (Zonas Protectoras), Forest Reserves, land-use capacity areas (classes I to VII), swamp and Yolillo areas (flooded areas), Wildlife Refuges, Areas subject to external payment, 2-kilometer buffer zones around the boundaries of the Protected Wild Areas (ASP).
Areas proposed as Protected Zones and expansions according to the CBM Project, secondary forest areas.
5.9.1.2. REFORESTATION CRITERIA Areas devoid of forest whose land-use capacity is forest production (Class V to VII), contained within: the proposed biological corridors and other areas (CBM and Abas projects), aquifer recharge areas, pasture areas outside ASP.
Areas devoid of forest whose land-use capacity is forest production (Class V to VII), contained within: Forest Reserves, Wildlife Refuges, and areas subject to payments from external projects.
Areas devoid of forest whose land-use capacity is forest production (Class V to VII), contained within: Proposed Protected Zones and expansions (CBM), other Land-Use Capacity areas (classes I to IV), 2-kilometer buffer zones around the boundaries of the ASP.
5.9.1.3. FOREST MANAGEMENT CRITERIA (CRITERIOS DE MANEJO DE BOSQUES) Lands proposed as Biological Corridors and other Areas (except proposed Protected Zones and expansions), according to the CBM project, Land-Use Capacity areas I to IV, secondary forest areas.

5.9.2. TÁRCOLES RIVER WATERSHED (CUENCA HIDROGRÁFICA RÍO TÁRCOLES) 5.9.2.1. PROTECTION CRITERIA Privately owned areas located within National Parks, Protected Zones, river and spring protection zones according to Ley 7575, Art. 33, and that appear on the cartographic maps, aquifer recharge areas according to the FUNDECOR study, 1992, primary and secondary forest areas, Areas included within the Plama Virilla Project.
Areas within: Forest Reserves, areas proposed as Protected Zones and expansions, proposed biological corridors and other areas according to the Gruas project, land-use capacity areas corresponding to classes V to VIII.
Land-use capacity areas (classes I to IV), Wildlife Refuges.
5.9.2.2. REFORESTATION CRITERIA Areas devoid of forest whose land-use capacity is forest production (Class V to VII), contained within: Forest Reserves, pasture areas, areas included within the action area of the Plama Virilla Project of the Compañía Nacional de Fuerza y Luz.
Areas devoid of forest whose land-use capacity is forest production class V to VII, areas contained within Protected Zones.
Areas devoid of forest whose land-use capacity is forest production Class V to VII, contained within: Lands proposed as Biological Corridors and other Areas (except proposed Protected Zones and expansions) according to the CBM Project.
5.9.2.3. FOREST MANAGEMENT CRITERIA Areas with secondary forest cover (cobertura de bosque secundario) within land-use capacity classes V to VII.
Areas with primary forest cover (Bosque Primario) within land-use capacity classes V to VII.
Land-use capacity area classes I to IV.
5.9.3. REVENTAZÓN RIVER WATERSHED (CUENCA HIDROGRÁFICA RÍO REVENTAZÓN) 5.9.3.1. PROTECTION CRITERIA Privately owned areas located within National Parks, Protected Zones, river and spring protection zones that are demarcated on the cartographic maps, aquifer recharge areas according to the FUNDECOR study of 1992, land-use capacity areas (classes VII and VIII).
Areas located within: Forest Reserves, areas contained within the proposed Protected Zones, expansions, biological corridors, and other areas according to the CBM Project, Wildlife Refuges.
Areas comprised within land-use capacity (classes V and VI).
5.9.3.2. REFORESTATION CRITERIA Areas devoid of forest whose land-use capacity is forest production (Class V to VII).
Areas devoid of forest whose land-use capacity is forest production (Class V to VII), contained within: Protected Zones, Forest Reserves, Lands proposed as Biological Corridors and other areas (except proposed Protected Zones and expansions) according to the CBM project, pasture areas, Wildlife Refuges.

5.10. ARENAL HUETAR NORTE CONSERVATION AREA (ÁREA DE CONSERVACIÓN ARENAL HUETAR NORTE) 5.10.1. REFORESTATION CRITERIA a. SECTOR: All subregions of the conservation area, Mesoamerican Biological Corridor project.
CRITERIA:
Where there is a high potential for concentration of plantation blocks that allow industrial development.
Regional availability of areas devoid of forests resulting from the abandonment of agriculture and livestock farming.
Successful experiences by beneficiaries or organizations in the establishment and management of forest species.
Areas of influence of Decree N° 25663 – MINAE, green macaw and the almond tree. OBSERVACIONES: Pital Subregion.
Lands with potential for forest production:
Slopes up to 60%, provided the effective depth is greater than or equal to 70 cm.
That the areas subject to the management plan are located outside the protection zones.
That the species to be used in the management plans have good productive potential.
5.10.2. PITAL SUBREGION 5.10.2.1. FOREST PROTECTION CRITERIA (CRITERIOS DE PROTECCIÓN DEL BOSQUE) a. SECTOR: Lomas de Sahino, Chaparrón, Palmar Golfito, Boca tapada, Yucatán, Pitalito, Mollejón.
CRITERION:
Forested areas that are protecting the water resource for the purpose of being used for human consumption, irrigation, and hydroelectric energy production.
b. SECTOR: Areas of influence for the protection of the green macaw and almond tree, Pital – La Cureña – Los Ángeles de Sarapiquí. OBSERVACIONES: According to Decree N° 25663 – MINAE.
CRITERION:
Areas of scientific interest and preservation of endangered species.
c. SECTOR: Cureña Tamborcito Forest Reserve. OBSERVACIONES: Insert within the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor.
CRITERION:
Privately owned lands located within protected wild areas and adjacent areas.
Areas included within the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor.
5.10.2.2. FOREST MANAGEMENT CRITERIA a. SECTOR: The entire subregion. OBSERVACIONES: All sites with forest cover, intervened or not.

Areas with forest cover for management (raw material).
b. SECTOR: The entire subregion. OBSERVACIONES: In the case of forests located in Protected Wild Areas (ASP) decreed by the State, the restrictions established for each management category must be respected.

Management of all privately owned forests.
c. SECTOR: La Cureña, San Luis, Tambor, Chantú, and other sectors. OBSERVACIONES: Sectors that were felled and subsequently abandoned.

For logged natural forest (bosque natural intervenido, phase II), the total basal area per hectare must be equal to or greater than 12 m2, measured on trees with diameters at breast height (DBH) greater than or equal to 30 cm.

Lands with land-use capacity VI, VII, and VIII, with evident signs of soil degradation.
Natural ecosystems in advanced succession towards forest.
Areas included within the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor.

FOREST MANAGEMENT CRITERIA a. SECTOR: Los Chiles and San Carlos, Pocosol and Cutris districts.

Areas that should form part of biological corridors according to the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor proposal.
