The obligation is established to use Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment by all the Conservation Area Offices of the National System of Conservation Areas when processing forest harvesting applications, whether small or special cutting permits (permisos de corta), forest inventories, management plans, or any other established for these purposes.
Georeferencing applies to the polygon of the property according to the cadastral map and to the trees requested for cutting, in accordance with what is established in this matter in the current Manual of Procedures for Timber Harvesting on Land under Agricultural Use and without Forest and Special Situations in Costa Rica and the Sustainability Standards for Forest Management in Costa Rica, the data from which shall allow overlay on the FONAFIFO 2000 image.
Likewise, georeferencing and data overlay on the FONAFIFO 2000 image must be used for the collection of information in the field, for cases of filing complaints against the environment.
All information collected must be kept in a digital record at each office, which will serve as a basis, among other uses, for feeding the Geo-spatial Information System of the Forest Management Units (SIG-UMF) and the SINAC Forest Harvesting Control System, SIREFOR.
Likewise, private professionals, forest managers (regentes forestales), public and private sectors, decentralized institutions, and especially municipalities, shall observe in their actions all the technical provisions contained in this Executive Decree when fulfilling their duties.
