Functions of biologists oriented toward forensic science:
- 1)Design and execute investigations and analyses requested by the competent authorities, applying the theoretical and practical principles of the profession.
- 2)Perform and interpret genetic and molecular analyses (DNA, proteins, etc.) for the identification of human remains, missing persons, unknown identities, paternity tests, genetic alterations, etc.
- 3)Collect biological samples at the scene or other sites with similar characteristics, as well as on clothing, tools, stones, and others.
- 4)Observe, compare, and identify hair, fibers, plant residues, animal specimens, and others.
- 5)Extract head hair and body hair samples to perform the mounting of the trichological pattern of the accused or victims.
- 6)Perform microscopic and stereoscopic analysis of the patterns and questioned samples, and complete the corresponding protocol.
- 7)Make cross-sections of fibers, head hair, and body hair.
- 8)Render, expand, or clarify expert opinions specific to their specialty.
- 9)Attend trials when required.
- 10)Safeguard evidence and give it proper use.
- 11)Give talks and training courses.
- 12)Take photographs, as required by the work.
- 13)Investigate and consult bibliographic and other sources in order to apply the knowledge acquired to the cases to be analyzed and keep their knowledge updated in the respective field.

- 4)Observe, compare, and identify species and plant and animal products or by-products, artificial wetlands, technological systems, purification methodologies, treatment systems, among others.
- 5)Render, expand, or clarify expert opinions specific to the specialty.
- 6)Attend trials when required.
- 7)Safeguard evidence and give it proper use.
- 8)Give talks and training courses.
- 9)Take photographs and videos as required by the work.
- 10)Investigate and consult bibliographic and other sources in order to apply the knowledge acquired to the cases to be analyzed and keep knowledge updated in the respective field.
- 11)Ensure that the materials and equipment required to carry out the work are available.
- 12)Serve the public and answer inquiries as permitted by law.
