Positive animal (Animal positivo): A reactor animal whose clinical interpretation and epidemiological investigation carried out or supervised by an Official or Authorized Veterinary Physician determines that it is infected with Tuberculosis.
Reactor animal (Animal reactor): Is that animal that has been subjected to one or more tuberculosis tests and has tested positive in at least one of them.
Free Herd Certificate (Certificado de Hato Libre): An official document that SENASA grants to bovine herds that have met the technical and administrative requirements to be considered free of Tuberculosis.
Control (Control): A set of sanitary measures aimed at reducing the circulation of the etiological agent in a geographical area or a compartment (herd).
Quarantine (Cuarentena): A sanitary measure based on the observation and restriction of the movement of animals, their products, and/or by-products due to the presence of tuberculosis.
C.V.O.: Acronym for the Veterinary Operation Certificate (Certificado Veterinario de Operación), issued by SENASA pursuant to article 56 of Law Nº 8495.
Mandatory particular control disease (Enfermedad de control particular obligatorio): Is that disease in which the State has the authority to design, dictate, execute, delegate, authorize, prohibit, or order all those actions, which the private individual must carry out at their own expense and that guarantee the health of people, animals, and trade.
Quarantined farm (Finca cuarentenada): A livestock operation that, by disposition of SENASA through the Program, is subject to restrictions on movement, exit, and/or entry of animals, products, and/or by-products.
Sanitary movement permit (Guía sanitaria de movilización): An official SENASA document prepared by an official or Authorized Veterinary Physician who carried out the sampling and marking of the positive animals, in which the transfer of these to a slaughterhouse is ordered.
Herd (Hato): A group of animals of the same species that is located in the epidemiological unit, permanently or for periods. Included within the same herd are animals that, for management reasons, are located in a dry period, breeding season, development, or other on a different farm, but that at intervals of time have contact with each other.
Free Herd (Hato Libre): Is that which has the corresponding certificate issued by SENASA upon complying with the stipulated procedure, which certifies the non-existence of positive animals.
Positive Herd (Hato Positivo): Is that herd in which at least one bovine positive for Tuberculosis has been detected in the last sampling.
Reactor Herd (Hato Reactor): Corresponds to the herd in which reactor animals to tuberculosis have been identified.
Inoculation (Inoculación): Application of a veterinary medicine to a living organism or substrate, with the aim of obtaining a diagnostic result.
LANASEVE: Acronym for the National Laboratory of Veterinary Services.
Procedures Manual (Manual de Procedimientos): An administrative resolution issued by the General Directorate of SENASA, published in the Official Gazette La Gaceta, which establishes the instructions and procedures for the prevention, control, and eradication of Tuberculosis in bovines.
Officially recognized slaughterhouse (Matadero oficialmente reconocido): An establishment dedicated to the slaughter of bovines for human consumption, and which has a veterinary regent, as well as a current Veterinary Operation Certificate.
Authorized Veterinary Physician (Médico Veterinario Oficializado): A professional in veterinary medicine in private practice, recognized and registered before the College of Veterinary Physicians of Costa Rica and authorized by SENASA to perform specific activities in official programs.
Prophylaxis measures (Medidas de profilaxis): A set of policies, plans, and concrete actions aimed at the prevention and protection against Tuberculosis.
Sample (Muestra): Blood, tissues, serum, organs, milk, or others that are related to tuberculosis and that are defined by SENASA, for the purpose of being analyzed through tests to establish the presence of the disease.
Masseter muscle (Músculo masetero): Lateral muscle of the head of a bovine at the level of the upper jaw.
OIE: Acronym for the World Organization for Animal Health Biological products (Productos biológicos): The reagents and antigens used to diagnose tuberculosis tests.
Program or sanitation plan (Programa o plan de saneamiento): Program for the Prevention, Control, and Eradication of Tuberculosis in animals.
Test Report (Reporte de Prueba): An official document issued by SENASA or by an Authorized Veterinary Physician to verify the fulfillment of the test procedure.
Necropsy room (Sala de necropsia): A physical space duly equipped with the appropriate biosecurity measures to perform the technical and scientific procedure of systematic anatomical dissection of an animal after its death to determine its cause.
SENASA: Acronym for the National Animal Health Service.
Assistant Technician (Técnico Asistente): A person who works under the tutelage and responsibility of the Authorized Veterinary Physician in accordance with the provisions of article 48 of Law No. 5395 of October 30, 1973, General Health Law.
Livestock production unit (Unidad de producción pecuaria): That production unit where animals of one or more species are kept and/or raised with the primary purpose of commercializing the production of all or some of them.
