"CENTRAL AMERICAN AGREEMENT FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT The Presidents of the Republics of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, aware of the need to establish regional cooperation mechanisms for the rational use of natural resources, pollution control, and the restoration of ecological balance; Convinced that to ensure a better quality of life for the Central American peoples, it is necessary to promote respect for the environment within the framework of a sustainable development model, in order to avoid the harmful effects that previous models have had on the natural resources of the region.
Aware that regional cooperation must constitute a fundamental instrument for the solution of ecological problems, due to the deep interdependence among the countries of the isthmus; And certain that the regional planning of the use of natural resources and the environment constitutes a fundamental factor for achieving lasting peace; We have decided to sign this Agreement, which shall be called:
CONSTITUTIVE AGREEMENT OF THE CENTRAL AMERICAN COMMISSION FOR ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT
By means of this Agreement, the Contracting States establish a regional cooperation regime for the optimal and rational use of the area's natural resources, pollution control, and the restoration of ecological balance, to guarantee a better quality of life for the population of the Central American isthmus.
