Fishing in inland waters is prohibited, which applies to both inland sport fishing and inland tourist fishing, reading as follows:
Inland sport fishing and inland tourist fishing of the following species and in the following places is prohibited:
a. Guapote (Parachromis spp), róbalo (Centropomus undecimalis), sábalo (Megalops atlanticus), and other fish species, in the following rivers and their tributaries: Frío, Zapote, Niño or Pizote, lagoons of the Refugio de Fauna Silvestre of Caño Negro and the Refugio de Fauna Silvestre Las Camelias, between April 1st and July 31st inclusive. Outside this period, fishing is permitted with a limit of five fish with a minimum size of 25 cm in length, per person per day.
b. Gaspar (Atractosteus tropicus) in the following rivers and their tributaries: Frío, Zapote, Niño or Pizote, lagoons of the Refugio de Fauna Silvestre of Caño Negro and the Refugio de Fauna Silvestre Las Camelias, between March 1st and August 31st inclusive. Outside this period, fishing is permitted with a limit of two fish with a minimum size of 60 cm in length, per person per day.
c. All species of freshwater fish in all rivers (including their tributaries, lakes, and lagoons), except as established in subsections e) and d) of this article, between September 1st and November 30th inclusive. Outside this period, fishing is permitted with a limit of 5 pieces with a minimum size of 25 cm in length, per person with a current inland fishing license and card. Exceptions are made for tepemechín (Agonostomus monticola), for which no length limit is established, and gaspar (Atractosteus tropicus), for which a minimum size of 60 cm is set.
d. River shrimp (Macrobrachium spp), in all national rivers between May 15th and November 30th inclusive. Outside this period, fishing is permitted with a limit of ten pieces per person per day.
e. Sport fishing and tourist fishing in the Laguna de Hule, located in the Refugio de Fauna Privado Bosque Alegre, Cariblanco.
f. In Indigenous Reserves (except for subsistence fishing carried out by Indigenous people).
g. 100 meters on both banks of the Río San Rafael in Muelle de San Carlos, between the bridge on the road connecting the community of Muelle with Pital and the mouth of the Río San Rafael into the Río San Carlos.
h. Fishing indefinitely in the Sarapiquí rivers, between the confluence of the Río Peje until its junction with the Puerto Viejo, between the confluence with the Río Sábalo Esquina, until its junction with the Sarapiquí.
For inland sport fishing and inland tourist fishing, the following is authorized:
a. Fishing with rod and reel, as well as hand lines, from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
b. Fishing every day of the year in:
b.1. The Río Reventazón from Palomo de Orosi to its mouth, with the exception of its tributaries. The limit of pieces is established at five fish with a size greater than 25 cm per fisher with an inland sport fishing or inland tourist fishing license, per day.
b.2. Fishing carried out with hand line or rod and reel in the Embalse de Arenal. The limit of pieces is established at 10 fish per licensed fisher, per day.
b.3. In the Barras de Colorado, Parismina, Tortuguero, and Matina. The limit of pieces in the cited river bars will be five fish per licensed fisher, per day. A river bar shall be understood as the riverbed extending up to one kilometer upstream, starting from the mouth.
c. The subsistence fishing carried out by Indigenous people in the Indigenous Reserves.
